Myrna Renaud, Puertorican dancer/ choreographer/ educator/ writer/ designer/
vocalist has been experimenting with interdisciplinary site-specific
public art since 1988; building up-scaled altars to Yoruba deities
in theatres, ritual dancescapes in urban parks, storefront window
installations and live percussion monuments under century old
trees.
Her dance training includes Graham, Cunningham and Dunham techniques,
as well as West African and Caribbean forms.
In Puerto Rico she is the artistic director/ teacher/ curator
of Taller Nuestra Esencia Africana, La Incubadora and El Escuadrón
del Ritmo, dance laboratories which have produced numerous experimental
interdisciplinary events.
In Texas, U.S.A. she is well known for her spirited master classes,
workshops and residencies which inspire participants to live fully
through the dance and voice.
In October 1998, Myrna Renaud represented Puerto Rico at the world
dance conference CONTINENTS IN MOVEMENT in Portugal, sponsored
by Universidade Técnica de Lisboa, Faculdade de Motricidad Humana.
She presented a lecture demonstration entitled: PUNTOS EVOLUTIVOS
DE LA DANZA CRIOLLA ANTILLANA DEL SIGLO DIECINUEVE, which spoke
of the relationship that 19th century antillean lace and tobacco
female workers had to their product and henceforth to the making
of their culture. She also presented a lecture with visuals entitled:
RESCATE URBANO: ROMPIENDO BARRERAS ARQUITECTONICAS / LA INSTALACION
DE DANZA EN VITRINA COMO ALTERNATIVA AL TEATRO DE PROSCENIO, which
documents her store front window installations and their legitimacy
as barrier-free dance art.
Myrna Renaud will be in residency at Houston Community College
/ Central Performing Arts, Houston, TX and at Yang Chengfu Tai
Chi Chuan Center, USA, San Antonio, TX in the early part of 2000.
